Top Reasons House Fires Start in the Winter Season | SERVPRO of Huntington
5/11/2024 (Permalink)
Keep you and yours safe this holiday season with some fire safety tips from SERVPRO of Huntington.
Winter in Huntington brings chilly temperatures and cozy nights by the fireplace. However, it also brings an increased risk of house fires. Understanding the common causes of winter fires can help you protect your home and loved ones.
Learn along with us about the top most common reasons for house fires in our community even when the temperature drops below freezing.
Heating Systems
One of the leading causes of house fires in the winter is heating systems. Furnaces, space heaters and fireplaces work overtime to keep homes warm, but they can also pose a fire hazard if not used properly.
Old or poorly maintained furnaces can malfunction, leading to fires. It’s essential to have your furnace inspected and serviced regularly by a qualified professional. Additionally, ensure there’s proper ventilation around the furnace and keep flammable materials away.
Space heaters are convenient for heating specific areas, but they can be dangerous if not used correctly. Keep space heaters at least three feet away from flammable objects like curtains, furniture and bedding. Never leave them unattended or plugged in overnight.
Cooking Accidents
Winter is the season for hearty soups, roasts and baked treats, but it’s also a time when cooking-related fires are more common.
With holiday gatherings and busy schedules, it’s easy to get distracted while cooking. Unattended stove tops or ovens can quickly lead to fires. Always stay in the kitchen while cooking, especially when using the stove or broiler.
Frying foods like latkes or chicken can lead to grease fires if not handled properly. Never throw water on a grease fire, as it can cause the flames to spread. Instead, cover the pan with a lid or use a fire extinguisher specifically rated for grease fires.
Candles and Electrical Issues
It’s warm inside, it’s cozy and it’s time for candles. Candle use spikes in the winter season, but that also is part of the reason why house fires spike as well during this time of year. Keep wicks trimmed and never leave a candle to burn in an empty room. Blow out candles before you walk out of a room or bring it with you so you can keep an eye on it.
Electrical malfunctions are also more common in the winter. Avoid overloading your outlets to help avoid starting a serious fire and never leave your phone to charge on a soft surface or in an area that isn’t easily ventilated, like under your pillow.
By being aware of these common causes of house fires in the winter, you can take proactive steps to prevent them and keep your home safe. Stay warm, stay vigilant and have a happy and fire-safe winter season!

Understanding the dangers and prevention methods for house fires is essential for avoiding the costly damage they can cause.
Naturally, the best method to stay safe against house fires is through keeping smoke alarms operational, but there are many other ways homeowners can avoid a fire starting around the house.
The Frequency of House FiresMany people do not fully grasp the risk house fires can pose and how often they occur. The National Fire Protection Association reports that every 24 seconds, a house fire occurs, meaning there are a shocking number of fires each day.
Cooking is the leading cause of house fires, but there are many other causes that can spark a flame.
Steps to Prevent House FiresBecause fire is so powerful, one simple mistake can lead to a full-on house fire if one is not careful. The best thing to do is to learn about house fire prevention steps to keep flames at bay:
Test smoke alarms. Though the hope is that one will never have to use a smoke alarm, it is important that they are working in case the need arises. Perform monthly battery checks and replace them every 10 years.
Prevent dryer lint buildup. Dryer trays can hold an excessive amount of lint, which provides the perfect combustible material if allowed to collect. After each load, clean out the tray to avoid combustion from the dryer’s heat.
Keep an eye on flames. Because most of us use flames every day for candles, cooking and more, it can be easy to forget the risk they can cause. It is best to not leave flames unattended.
Keep cables in good condition. Electrical cables and household wires should be inspected frequently and replaced if fraying is found.
Protect household supplies. Because many household supplies contain flammable materials and come in aerosol cans, it is best to keep these products away from heat sources or direct sunlight.

What is a Puff Back?
11/1/2021 (Permalink)
What is a Puff Back?
A puff back is an explosion that forces soot and debris through the furnace or the boiler's exhaust system and into your home or business.
The good news is that most puff back cleanups are covered by insurance. Our professionals here at SERVPRO of North Huntington can walk you through the claim process step by step and make it "Like it never even happened.” In fact, our customers often tell us that their properties look and smell cleaner than before!
During a puff back event, soot typically covers most areas of the property including: drapes, bedding, furniture, clothing, cabinetry, ceilings, walls and floors, all of which is extremely difficult to remove. Soot coverage can range from a light dusting to a concentrated dark appearance especially on flat surfaces like counter tops. While you may be tempted to clean the affected area yourself, we don’t recommend it. The soot will settle and re-appear hours afterwards and can cause additional damage. Don’t be fooled that the dust/soot is only where you see it. It travels everywhere that the air does—into every nook and cranny. Sometimes you will find what you think are black “spider webs” in the corners of a room. These marks are actually a collection of the sticky soot.
At SERVPRO of North Huntington, we have the appropriate equipment, knowledge and experience to properly get the job done. We are here to help!

How Does a Puff Back Happen?
A puff back happens when an oil burner doesn't immediately ignite and oil fumes are allowed to build up before ignition. This results in an explosion similar to what happens when a car backfires. It may also occur from a buildup of debris, causing an explosion when the furnace turns on. In either case, the explosion forces soot and debris through the furnace or the boiler's exhaust system and into your home or business. The problem is worse with forced hot air systems as the heating ducts spread black soot into every corner of your home, with the same efficiency that they spread heat throughout your property.
Fact #1: Most puff back cleanups are covered by insurance. The professionals at SERVPRO of North Huntington can walk you through the claim process step by step and make it "Like it never even happened.” In fact, our customers often tell us that their properties look and smell cleaner than it ever did before!
During a puff back event, oil based soot typically covers all areas of the property including drapes, bedding, furniture, clothing, cabinetry, ceilings, walls and floors, all of which is extremely difficult to remove. In most instances, you will know that you’ve had a puff back! But there may be times when it is harder to detect because the soot coverage can range from a light dusting to a concentrated dark appearance especially on flat surfaces like counter tops. While you may be tempted to clean the affected area yourself, we don’t recommend you do that as the "dust" will likely re-appear hours afterwards. There may or may be a strong odor in the affected rooms. Don’t be fooled that the dust is only where you see it. It travels everywhere that the air does—into every nook and cranny. Sometimes you will find what you think are black “spider webs” in the corners of a room. These marks are actually a collection of the sticky soot. At SERVPRO of North Huntington, we have the appropriate equipment, knowledge, experience and training to properly get the job done.
Fact # 2: The cost to repair a furnace will NOT likely be covered by insurance.
Puff backs create an unhealthy environment for everyone and you should not touch or breathe the soot or particles that are floating through the air and landing on the surfaces of your property.
Fact #3: Most oil companies can inspect and service the boiler at your property, which greatly reduces the chances of a puff back. However, there is no guarantee against such an occurrence.
If you have experienced a puff back in your home or business, contact SERVPRO of North Huntington today, 631-423-1734.

Smoke alarms are a key part of a home fire escape plan.
- A closed door may slow the spread of smoke, heat and fire. Install smoke alarms in every sleeping room and outside each separate sleeping area. Install alarms on every level of the home. Install alarms in the basement. Smoke alarms should be interconnected. When one sounds, they all sound.
- Large homes may need extra smoke alarms.
- It is best to use interconnected smoke alarms. When one smoke alarm sounds they all sound.
- Test all smoke alarms at least once a month. Press the test button to be sure the alarm is working.
- Today’s smoke alarms will be more technologically advanced to respond to a multitude of fire conditions, yet mitigate false alarms.
- A smoke alarm should be on the ceiling or high on a wall. Keep smoke alarms away from the kitchen to reduce false alarms. They should be at least 10 feet (3 meters) from the stove.
- People who are hard-of-hearing or deaf use special alarms. These alarms have strobe lights and bed shakers.
- Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old.

- Use flashlights instead of candles if your power goes out.

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of North Huntington will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:
Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber
- Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.
Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood
- Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.
Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire
- Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

4. Water removal and drying (if water damage is present). Fires also generally bring water damage. We begin the removal process, getting all wet items out of the structure right away. We bring in dehumidifiers and air movers to remove the remaining water and finish up the drying process.
5. Removal of smoke and soot from all surfaces. Through the use of specialized equipment and techniques, we are able to remove smoke and soot from ceilings, walls and other surfaces.
6. Cleaning and sanitizing. We will clean restorable items and structures when it is possible. Not only will they be cleaned, but we engage the use of industrial air scrubbers and fogging equipment to help remove odors.
7. Restoration. The final step in getting your property back to pre-fire condition is restoration. This can include minor repairs like replacing drywall, painting and installing new carpet, as well as possible major repairs like reconstruction of damaged areas.
Remember, if you need us, we’ll be there—no matter the time or day. The team of highly trained restoration experts at SERVPRO® of North Huntington is available for emergency cleanup and restoration services 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Avoiding Fire Hazards While Cooking
5/28/2019 (Permalink)
Do you have fond memories of spending quality time in the kitchen with loved ones while catching up with each other or preparing and sharing a meal together? The kitchen can be a wonderfully versatile place, but it is also a place where many home fires break out.
Cooking fires top the charts as the No. 1 cause of home fires and injuries, and the leading cause of these kitchen fires is unattended cooking.
In 2017 alone, State Farm paid out in excess of $130 million in homeowners insurance claims related to grease and other cooking fires. According to the insurance company, these are the worst states for kitchen fires:
- North Carolina
- Texas
- Pennsylvania
- California
- Ohio
- Illinois
- Maryland
- New York
- Alabama
- Georgia
Cooking Safety Tips
Besides the obvious precaution of staying in the kitchen while cooking, this is not the only fire safety tip you should be following. Here are some other helpful tips to observe while cooking:
1. Be careful of the type of clothing you are wearing. If your outfit has long, flowing sleeves or is oversized and baggy, it could catch on fire if you aren’t careful while cooking over the stove. It’s best to wear short or close-fitted sleeve shirts and make sure any baggy shirts are tucked in or tied back.
2. Keep flammable objects away from the stovetop. Make sure kitchen towels, oven mitts, appliance cords or even curtains aren’t too close to the stovetop when cooking. Ideally, anything flammable will be moved away from it.
3. Equip your home with a fire extinguisher in or near the kitchen. Hopefully you have at least one fire extinguisher located in your home, ideally one that is near your kitchen. Make sure you know how to properly use the extinguisher, just in case it is ever needed.
4. Hot grease is a fire hazard when placed in the garbage too soon. Do not throw hot grease in the garbage can. The grease may not be on fire, but it could be hot enough to cause something in the trash to burn. You should let the grease cool a bit and then dispose of it in an old coffee can. Also, know the smoke points of the oils you cook with. Be sure to never subject a low-smoke point oil to high heat when cooking, as it could catch fire.
5. Make sure you have a fire escape plan established. Thinking about and being prepared for the worst that can happen can save lives, and it’s better to be safe than sorry should an emergency occur. Go over exit routes and designated meeting places with your family, making sure that everyone knows what to do.
Fire safety in the kitchen is an absolute necessity, as it can help prevent dangerous and destructive cooking fires. If your home has experienced damage from a cooking fire, know that SERVPRO® of North Huntington is here to make it “Like it never even happened.”

Protecting Your Business From Fire Hazards
3/13/2019 (Permalink)
Business owners carry a lot of responsibility. As a business owner, one of those responsibilities is considering plenty of safety factors regarding risks to your business, staff and visitors. One thing that will need to be addressed is fire prevention.
Protecting Your Business From Fire Hazards
By focusing on fire risk assessment, fire prevention and staff education, you are taking some of the many steps that will help reduce the chance of a fire breaking out.
First, make an assessment of any fire hazard risks in your facility. To aid you in this step, in some areas, local governments may offer a visit from a fire marshal to work with you in identifying these risks and providing guidance on your fire prevention plan.
You’ll want to make sure that the right fire protection equipment, such as automatic sprinkler systems, smoke detectors and fire extinguishers, are in place on each floor.
Finally, you must consider the safety of your employees. By creating a fire plan and taking time to review it with your staff, you’ll be making sure everyone knows what to do in the case of a fire. By conducting fire drills at least once a year and reviewing evacuation plans and routes as well as the location of first-aid kits, your fire safety procedures will remain fresh in their minds.
Despite best efforts with fire prevention and safety tips, the worst could always happen at your business. If a fire has damaged your business, SERVPRO® of North Huntington is available to help make it "Like it never even happened."
Leading Causes of Commercial Structure Fires

Leading Causes of Commercial Structure Fires
According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the main causes of structure fires to office properties from 2007–2011 were (in order):
- Cooking equipment, 29% of fires
- Electrical distribution and lighting equipment, 12% of fires
- Heating equipment, 11% of fires
- Intentional, 10% of fires
- Smoking materials, 9% of fires
- Exposure, 4% of fires
- Electronic, office or entertainment equipment, 3% of fires
Of those causes, intentional, exposure, and electrical distribution and lighting equipment accounted for the most property damage with 20%, 18% and 15% respectively.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics found that in 2007, fires and explosions accounted for 3% of all workplace fatalities.
When looking to more recent numbers, the NFPA estimates that from 2007–2011, U.S. fire departments responded to an average of 3,340 fires in office properties per year. Those fires resulted in an annual average of four deaths, 44 injuries and $112 million in direct property damage.

Wet or dry smoke damage???
6/25/2018 (Permalink)
Different Types of Smoke
